Creating the PAUSE: Breaking the Cycle of Biased-Based Behaviors in the Workplace is a personal examination session to understand and uncover how our own personal biases impact our own decisions, interpersonal relationship abilities, stress management and even to guide and influence our business customers towards true equity and inclusion efforts. In 2022, it is not enough to be “supportive” of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion practices within any organization, the Human Resource professional needs to become on the ground champions to challenge their customers to revolutionize their workplaces. Uncovering the ways in which unconscious bias exists within HR functional areas (recruitment, hiring, planning, employee relations, training & development, compensation, classification, time/attendance, project teams, recognition, etc.) is imperative to ensure our customers are also removing their biases from their involvement of the business of HR. We will spend the hour of the session to explore these topics, discuss mitigation strategies and ways to challenge our business customers to be assessing their own approach to make necessary changes for a truly human-centered work environment.

The program will be presented by Darice Mayhew, SHRM-SCP and Sara McFadden, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, from the PA Governor’s Office of Administration Bureau of Talent Development. 

Darice Mayhew, SHRM-SCP is a Talent Planning Manager within the PA Governor’s Office of Administration Bureau of Talent Planning. Darice has a long Commonwealth of PA career spanning administrative and Talent Development initiatives and has managed many prestigious developmental and recognition programs for the Commonwealth workforce, including the Emerging Leader Program, Governor’s Awards for Excellence, and most recently, the OneHR HR Business Partner Professional Development program and OneHR Connect platform programming. Darice serves on the Communications Committee for HRPCPA, a Member-at-Large for the Capital Area Professional HR Association (CAPHRA), and the membership chairperson for the Diversity & Inclusion Professionals of Central PA (DIPCPA) and successfully achieved her SHRM-SCP in 2021. 

Sara McFadden, SPHR, SHRM-SCP is the Director of Curriculum & Program Design within the PA Governor’s Office of Administration Bureau of Talent Development. She has worked within the Commonwealth since 2010 in various HR Generalist areas; in 2014, she discovered the world of Talent Development and hasn’t looked back! Sara’s primary areas of focus are within organizational development initiatives, performance management, and in leadership development programming with focus on curating development opportunities to marginalized populations within the commonwealth. Sara has been a HRPCPA member since 2012, and a Professional Development committee member, and has successfully achieved her SPHR and SHRM-SCP through the support and guidance of the HRPCPA study groups.
